How To Stop Eating Sugar & Feel Great!

Sugar intake is one of the most harmful ways to treat your bad mood. Initially the rush of simple carbs could feel good, but once that rush burns up (and it does so pretty fast), it has taken a big chunk of your anti-stress hormone, cortisol, and spiked your insulin causing a lot of damage to the body and brain. I know as well as anyone that it’s REALLY hard to stop eating sugar. I mean, it is in everything, right? Wrong. There are foods that you can eat that give you that “cheat day” feeling, without the “cheat day” results.

Now I am certainly not a body builder by any means, but I do know how terrible sugar and white starchy simple carbohydrates can be for the body and the brain. Putting them in the body is just begging for more stress and unnecessary pounds. So I am going to give you a couple of supplements that can help you quit eating sugar and help those cravings for candy go away. I am also going to tell you about some of my favorite snacks made without sugar that will help you with the gnarly cravings.

Glutamine and Chromium are supplements that if taken together, can do wonders to help fight off cravings. Chromium helps restore blood-sugar stability and eases the cravings for carbs after your blood-sugar levels drop. Glutamine is used by the brain as an emergency fuel when you haven’t eaten recently. Glutamine is a glucose substitute that will stop the impulse to buy sweets or gorge on white flour carbs when your blood-sugar runs low. The combination of these too special supplements will be sure to kick out the need for sweet treats.

If you are still feeling like you want some of that sweet or starchy stuff in a moment of weakness… I gotchu family. Here is my top 5 no harm no foul foods that will absolutely help with the times where you just can’t help yourself:

  1. Sea Salt Kettle Chips

I will be the first to admit that I will gorge on these bad boys all day. They have absolutely no sugar and are super delicious. But again, make sure it’s the bag that you see above, or else you are eating sugar. This is one of my favorite no sugar finds.

2. Simple Mills Crunchy Cinnamon Cookies

These are an absolute GOD SEND for me. They are sweet, tasty, and go great with a glass of cold vanilla almond milk. Another great find, and again, no sugar. The secret to these is that they use maple syrup instead of sugar. Sweeteners like maple syrup, honey, agave, and stevia DO NOT break down like sugar does in the body. These sweeteners will release glucose into the bloodstream more steadily without spiking your insulin or effecting cortisol directly, which is the primary problem contributing to stress and weight gain.

3. LuLu’s Organic 68% Cacao Chocolate Bar

In the mood for chocolate? Do you want all of benefits of arginine without the empty calories? LuLu’s 68 Organic Chocolate Bar is delicious, and you won’t miss out on the sweetness and flavor that a regular chocolate bar gives you without the sugar. Keep in mind these aren’t “sugar-free”. These products are made with sweeteners that are healthier for your body, and Lulu’s chocolate is a fan favorite!

4. Oogave Organic Root Beer

If you are looking to get a soda, try this Organic agave sweetened root beer. To me, it tastes a lot better than all of the sugary brands, and trust me, I’m definitely a root beer snob! This one brand blew me away at the first taste, and they even have other flavors like cream soda and cola.

5. Hail Mary Coconut Bites

These things are REDONKULUS!!! My favorite flavor is a toss up between cookie dough and sea salt and caramel. You cannot go wrong with these, and they will absolutely be sure to satisfy any sugar cravings without the refined sugar.

Between, the glutamine, chromium and sweet sugarless snacks I uncovered in this article, you should have all of the necessary information to get sugar out of your life for good. And with the sugar component being overcome, you should feel a big shift in energy levels and have a healthier, happier mood.

The Exhausted Adrenals & The Ultimate Brain Balance Starter Kit

Many people that have PTSD suffer from a constant state of being on edge due to low cortisol levels. The adrenal glands play a big role in a lot of mood and mental disorders. Do you feel on edge a lot of the time? Like you are in constant “red alert”? You might be suffering from low cortisol as well.

Another indicator of this could be emotional exhaustion due to a stressful job, family issues, or relationship struggles. If you feel deplete of energy or suffer from low cortisol and PTSD, this could cause random outbursts of aggression. Have you ever just SNAPPED on someone because you felt overly agitated or annoyed, even though they hardly did anything to antagonize this reaction?

This is a classic example of your adrenals not producing enough cortisol and can be fixed in a few ways.

Studies show that a combination of these three amino acids can restore depleted brain chemical levels to stabilize false moods and PTSD:

  • GABA
  • 5HTP
  • Tyrosine

These three amino acids are essential in balancing serotonin (5HTP), refueling the catecholamines from the adrenals (Tyrosine), and reducing neuronal excitability in the nervous system (GABA). All three of them used together are a great starting point for ultimate brain chemical balance.

I, personally am an avid user of GABA to relax at night. I take a water soluble formula from a brand that I trust which can be purchased down below. I apply three squirts under my tongue before bed to ensure relaxation and put my nerves to rest after a long day.

Buy a bottle from amazon.com here: https://amzn.to/2y7n5rI and before going to sleep at night squirt 3 pumps underneath your tongue, let it sit for 15 seconds and then swallow. Effects should take place immediately.

The serotonin I receive through taking Tryptophan, but 5HTP works just as well. You can learn more from an earlier post: Caffeine, Cocaine and The Blood Brain Barrier… How Doctors Turn Depression Into Dollar $igns

And as for the Tyrosine, it can have the same effect as coffee in the morning. The Tyrosine molecules stimulate your catecholamines and give your body and brain the awake alertness that your body needs to stay focused and productive. You can find another post about tyrosine here: Tyrosine: The Supplemental Anti-Depressant

Anyway, the point is; whether you have a lot of stress in your life, PTSD, or just want the peace that comes with balanced neurochemistry; these three amino acids can give you the nutritional support to start developing a balanced and healthy life.

When I tell people that I use self-hypnosis as one of my enormously powerful secret weapons in healing my mind, some people freak out. Their eyes stretch wide open, and their jaws drop as if saying “I could never do something like that, and I never will.” But what if I told you that your subconscious is already programmed organically? and manifests in all of our behaviors; good and unruly. And what if I told you there are ways to reprogram your subconscious the ways that YOU would like, to be able to make you feel comfortable in your own skin, make you smarter, or more successful? Isn’t that what you want? Isn’t that what everyone wants?

For example, I struggled for a long time with waking up late and becoming comfortable with an unproductive day. After listening to one 20 minute motivation Hypnosis session by Thomas Hall, I felt energized and ready to get on with my work and stop sleeping in so late. I even stopped smoking using a hypnosis session… If you’re still convinced that it’s a bunch of bologna, then, you clearly just need to try it.

As humans we look for the easiest way to fix our problems. If there was ever a magic wand in the world it would be waving in front of the magician’s eyes telling him everything he’s ever needed to hear to get what he wants. How do you think your life is going to change if your mentality doesn’t? The easiest way is to change your thoughts, which is exactly how hypnosis works.

Let me also say that all hypnosis is self-hypnosis. No one can feed you affirmations that you aren’t willing to accept. And if you’re thinking that you could wake up with a bland personality, or be a spy and not know it, you’re believing in a delusion created by Hollywood.

Hypnosis has helped me so tremendously that I would like to give you a FREE session for signing up for the Mind Heal Mind newsletter. What I am about to give you is essential for anyone that struggles with anxiety and depression and will take you out of a funk pretty quickly.

And as far as my newsletter goes, I am here to give free resources to improve the lives of those suffering with mental illness and self-care. So I want to make clear that this is NOT to offer you some useless products that will do nothing for you. I will inform you of new uploads, techniques, and supplements, minerals or foods that will help you feel better and relieve stress, anxiety, depression, insomnia etc.

My hope is that we will start sharing information as a solution and change the lives of those struggling with their mental health, just as I have changed mine. So if you know something, pass it on.

Niacin B3: The Little Known Secrets

I’ll be the first to admit that taking niacin isn’t the popular health choice by any means for a few reasons, but there is a lot of misinformation around this topic and it’s effects on the human body that I want to make clear within this article.

I will start by saying that I take 500-1500mg of niacin everyday. I will also be the first to admit that the flush that comes from this vitamin is uncomfortable to say the least. But there is a method to the madness and it is something I absolutely need  in order to stay in balance and maintain mental stability. My friends may ask “Nick, why do you put yourself through the torture of turning into an itchy lobster for 30min to an hour each day?”

Well, after a while it becomes routine and doesn’t bother me, but the absolute best answer I can give you, is that vitamin B3 is an essential element in metabolizing tryptophan into a neurotransmitter called serotonin. If you have read my past article on tryptophan then you may know a little about the importance of maintaining this pathway. There are two essential neurotransmitter pathways that you need to know of to maintain optimal mental health; dopamine and serotonin. I look at both pathways like gas gauges, when my serotonin level depletes I am at risk of becoming manic from dopamine overload (A.K.A feelings of being invincible and “save the world” syndrome). When I am deplete in both my deepest darkest depression surfaces and I am filled with suicidal thoughts and feelings of extreme guilt and shame. I talk more about the dopamine pathway in a past article called “Tyrosine: The Supplemental Anti-Depressant“.

Primarily though, serotonin makes you to feel more like yourself, more comfortable and less anxious, happier and less stressed.

Screen Shot 2018-08-28 at 6.13.55 PM

Did you know that the upcoming generations are less and less likely to methylate, meaning, break down B vitamins in order to create serotonin and other neurotransmitters in the body. This is a huge issue! Each upcoming generation seems to be becoming more anti-social and anxious in situations that do not involve the internet. My hypothesis is that our generational genetic mutations are becoming less likely to create healthy and adequate doses of serotonin and other essential neurochemicals due to lack of nutrition. This is where niacin is key. Niacin is a folate, meaning it can break down in the body without the methylation process and serve to metabolize tryptophan into serotonin immediately.

BUT WAIT! THERE’S MORE… Many of us have heard of the ungodly flush of the B3 Vitamin. Where it is uncomfortable, it does something very spectacular. It actually opens up the blood capillaries on the skin and expels toxins from fat cells. This is VITAL because your brain is made of fat tissue. That means a lot of toxins are stored there.

Many websites will tell you that it is dangerous to take, and it is, if not taken properly. I take 2 parts vitamin C to 1 part Niacin daily. The vitamin C is to coat your liver and prevent any damage from occurring there. This is the safe way to use niacin and trust me, niacin is completely healthy to take.

If you are thinking of starting a regimen for yourself it is best to start with 250mg of niacin and 500mg of vitamin C taken at the same time daily. You may not even feel a flush when starting, this only means that your body desperately needed this vitamin and is getting used to having it back in your body.

If you are on the fence, make sure to do research with holistic doctors and naturopathic health sites. Remember, holistic health is separate from modern western medicine. It is a science that I, myself have sworn my life by. I hope this article informed you in some way. Tyrosine: The Supplemental Anti-Depressant

What is Tyrosine?

Tyrosine is an amino acid found in many high protein foods. This amino acid is a starting point in the chain of production for catecholamines in the body , which are responsible for the firing of neurons and creating a healthy reward pathway. Included in the catecholamines are epinephrine (adrenaline), norepinephrine (noradrenaline), and dopamine. The hormones epinephrine, and norepinephrine are part of the “fight or flight” response. Primarily norepinephrine is the hormone that makes life worth living and goals feel attainable while epinephrine makes it easier to run or fight in dangerous situations.

How Tyrosine Helps You

Do you find it hard to get up in the morning? Do you usually need a cup of coffee before you can start your day? Of course you do! Because your body is looking for an extremely essential ingredient for you to wake up and stay alert. An amino acid found in caffeine molecules called… yep you guest it! tyrosine. The Mayo Clinic states that “consuming more than 500-600 mg of caffeine a day may lead to insomnia, nervousness, restlessness, irritability, an upset stomach, a fast heartbeat and even muscle tremors.” Your body knows what it needs and where to get it from, but this source may be a little more of a detriment than you may realize. Find out about caffeine spikes and how to drink coffee without the harmful crash here.

Taken as a dietary supplement, tyrosine can actually give you all the benefits that coffee can like:

  • Improved mood
  • The feeling of being driven and motivated
  • Concentration and focus
  • Sense of purpose
  • Sense of self-fulfillment
  • The feeling of “getting things done”

without all of the harmful side effects. But even better, it can help bring you out of a depressive slump and help you love life again. You know that feeling… the “I could take over the world today” kind of mentality. That is what you get when your reward pathway is active and breaking down tyrosine to support the catecholamine hormones.

Who It Doesn’t Help

Like me, if you suffer from mania, it is possible that tyrosine could trigger this and/or make it worse. However, if I am on a depressive swing, I will take an endorphin pack that contains a smaller dose of supplemental tyrosine for only a couple of days until I start feeling better. Even for a couple of days, it still can make sustainable change for your reward pathway.

How To Use This Supplement

It is always a good idea to consult a naturopathic doctor before taking supplements for personal neurochemistry balancing. But if that is not possible for you and your depression seems to be getting worse, it may benefit you just to take 2 tyrosine capsules first thing in the morning and then 1 before exercise. Then ween yourself down to two capsules in the morning once you start to feel more motivated and focused. If the depression is more mild, then by taking 2 capsules upon waking up is a pretty general and effective regimen. Make sure not to take this supplement in the evening or after 5pm, because at that point it may inhibit sleep.
