Blow Away Depression And Feel “Euphoric”

My experience with depression has been a sliding scale from the jump. When I was on pharmaceuticals such as Depakote and Zyprexa, I had deep depression due to an overwhelming lack of drive. I was eating everything in the house and feeling sorry for myself because I was gaining so much weight and I couldn’t stop. I was no longer the bright and happy eighteenth year old boy my family and friends knew. I did nothing, and felt miserable. I couldn’t have cared less if I had lived or died at that point.

After coming off pharmaceuticals using alternative, holistic medicine, I then found a different form of depression. The kind that wakes you up in despair, only to say “you should just go back to sleep”.

A few years went by with inevitable bouts of these false moods like anxiety, stress and depression until I found something that truly worked miracles…

There are two components to this, and if done properly, depression and anxiety don’t stand a chance because you’ll be able to pop out of it as fast as it creeps up.

The “secret” is exercise (bleh… I know, but wait) and an endorphin pack in the morning. Endorphins are endogenous opioid neuropeptides and peptide hormones in the human and animal brain. Yes, I did say “opioid”, but please don’t go shooting dope expecting to cure your depression. When endorphins are released in the body, though, it does have a similar feeling to that of morphine. They diminish pain, act as a sedative, and contrary to morphine, they don’t become addictive.

One “Endorphin Pack” in the morning, combined with as little as 20 minutes of exercise later in the day was enough to pull me out of depression immediately. But, for me, since bi-polar 1 includes mania, I only took it for a 3 day period to pull me out of the gutter and into the sunlight. Niacin B3: The Little Known Secrets

I’ll be the first to admit that taking niacin isn’t the popular health choice by any means for a few reasons, but there is a lot of misinformation around this topic and it’s effects on the human body that I want to make clear within this article.

I will start by saying that I take 500-1500mg of niacin everyday. I will also be the first to admit that the flush that comes from this vitamin is uncomfortable to say the least. But there is a method to the madness and it is something I absolutely need  in order to stay in balance and maintain mental stability. My friends may ask “Nick, why do you put yourself through the torture of turning into an itchy lobster for 30min to an hour each day?”

Well, after a while it becomes routine and doesn’t bother me, but the absolute best answer I can give you, is that vitamin B3 is an essential element in metabolizing tryptophan into a neurotransmitter called serotonin. If you have read my past article on tryptophan then you may know a little about the importance of maintaining this pathway. There are two essential neurotransmitter pathways that you need to know of to maintain optimal mental health; dopamine and serotonin. I look at both pathways like gas gauges, when my serotonin level depletes I am at risk of becoming manic from dopamine overload (A.K.A feelings of being invincible and “save the world” syndrome). When I am deplete in both my deepest darkest depression surfaces and I am filled with suicidal thoughts and feelings of extreme guilt and shame. I talk more about the dopamine pathway in a past article called “Tyrosine: The Supplemental Anti-Depressant“.

Primarily though, serotonin makes you to feel more like yourself, more comfortable and less anxious, happier and less stressed.

Did you know that the upcoming generations are less and less likely to methylate, meaning, break down B vitamins in order to create serotonin and other neurotransmitters in the body. This is a huge issue! Each upcoming generation seems to be becoming more anti-social and anxious in situations that do not involve the internet. My hypothesis is that our generational genetic mutations are becoming less likely to create healthy and adequate doses of serotonin and other essential neurochemicals due to lack of nutrition. This is where niacin is key. Niacin is a folate, meaning it can break down in the body without the methylation process and serve to metabolize tryptophan into serotonin immediately.

BUT WAIT! THERE’S MORE… Many of us have heard of the ungodly flush of the B3 Vitamin. Where it is uncomfortable, it does something very spectacular. It actually opens up the blood capillaries on the skin and expels toxins from fat cells. This is VITAL because your brain is made of fat tissue. That means a lot of toxins are stored there.

Many websites will tell you that it is dangerous to take, and it is, if not taken properly. I take 2 parts vitamin C to 1 part Niacin daily. The vitamin C is to coat your liver and prevent any damage from occurring there. This is the safe way to use niacin and trust me, niacin is completely healthy to take.

If you are thinking of starting a regimen for yourself it is best to start with 250mg of niacin and 500mg of vitamin C taken at the same time daily. You may not even feel a flush when starting, this only means that your body desperately needed this vitamin and is getting used to having it back in your body.

If you are on the fence, make sure to do research with holistic doctors and naturopathic health sites. Remember, holistic health is separate from modern western medicine. Tyrosine: The Supplemental Anti-Depressant

What is Tyrosine?

Tyrosine is an amino acid found in many high protein foods. This amino acid is a starting point in the chain of production for catecholamines in the body , which are responsible for the firing of neurons and creating a healthy reward pathway. Included in the catecholamines are epinephrine (adrenaline), norepinephrine (noradrenaline), and dopamine. The hormones epinephrine, and norepinephrine are part of the “fight or flight” response. Primarily norepinephrine is the hormone that makes life worth living and goals feel attainable while epinephrine makes it easier to run or fight in dangerous situations.

But if that is not possible for you and your depression seems to be getting worse, it may benefit you just to take 2 tyrosine capsules first thing in the morning and then 1 before exercise. Then ween yourself down to two capsules in the morning once you start to feel more motivated and focused. If the depression is more mild, then by taking 2 capsules upon waking up is a pretty general and effective regimen. Make sure not to take this supplement in the evening or after 5pm, because at that point it may inhibit sleep.
